When both sides of the brain are active and energy is running smoothly through the body, we can use both our creative energy and our logic to function in life and operate from a place of Presence. When we operate from this place and we are tapping into our Best and most Authentic Self; creating from a place of authenticity with the capacity to operate fearlessly from our Heart Space, causing huge shifts in the world for the Greater Good.
The left side of the brain is where we operate from a place of logic, animalistic nature, and that git’r’dun mentality. It’s where our logical, linear, abstract, sequential, analytical, literal and functional nature operates. It’s the part of us that is needed when we want to do arithmatic or read or write. This is considered our masculine side or our masculine energy, and it manages the right side of the body.
The right side of the brain is where we operate from a place of creativity, intuition, empathy, and that nurturing mentality. This is the part of us we use when we intuit, create, dance and flow poetry and music. This is considered our feminine side or our feminine energy, and it manages the left side of the body.
As you can see, both sides are important and neither one is good or bad. It’s just that when they operate together, we are able to come from a place of Presence, with access to our full capacity in all that we do. So how do you know which side of your brain is active at any given time? Here is an exercise that will show you:
Place your finger by your nose like this on the right side. Inhale, then exhale. Do you feel air coming out? Now check the left side. Which side is more dominant? Which side doesn’t have air coming? Or are they both active? This will tell you which part of the brain is active.
If the air is flowing on the right side, the left brain is active. If the air flowing in the left side, the right brain is active. If flowing through both nostrils, both sides of the brain are active. So this one way to tell how your energy is flowing through your body. The optimal goal is to operate from our center as much as possible; where both sides of the brain are activated and operating simultaneously.
In times past, this would be considered uncommon and hard to achieve for most people, but due to the shift in consciousness we are all going through, operating from this place of Presence is becoming more available to us all. Yet no one way is better than the other, it’s just one more guidepost to let you know how you are operating. Just as energy is dynamic and constantly changing, so yours may change from day to day or hour to hour. Now you have a tool to check!
So how to balance the energy so we are operating from our Center and both hemispheres are active?
In times past, traditions and cultures had spiritual initiations to activate both sides of the brain and bring its initiates to a place of knowing Who and What they truly are; awakening them to their Authentic Self and the possibilities of operating from this Space. Traditionally, there were rituals and Elders in the community to act as a Spiritual Guide for those initiates. Sadly, that has been lost in many modern cultures today – a time where people may need a Spiritual Guide more than ever – especially due to the incline in traumatic childhood instances (sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, etc) which can cause our upper energy centers to open before their time.
A Spiritual Guide is helpful if you are not in touch with your Inner Wisdom, or don’t know how to tell between the voices of your Inner Wisdom and the ego or mind. A Spiritual Guide will help you to tap into That which you already are; acting kind of like your ‘training wheels’, until you are ready to fly on your own. However, never give your power over to anyone or anything outside of you. Above all, listen to your body and your own Inner Wisdom (or Inner Guide). Take what works and leave the rest. Question everything. And if someone tells you that your experience is not your experience, know your own truth anyway.
If you’re going solo, there are many paths that can bring one to this place of Presence. It’s a very individualized choice. For some, religion is the way (although the message seems to have been lost in some traditions). For others, yoga feels right. Jewish Mysticism is another path. It doesn’t have to be spiritual at all, in which case one can simply practice meditation or mindfulness; approaches that both transcend and enhance religion and spirituality.
My training and background are in yoga, meditation, spiritual psychology, and jewish mysticism; with a side-interest in esoteric Christianity and Christian Mysticism.
So how about you? What spiritual paths resonate with you, and why? Comment and let’s talk!
